Marijuana prohibition has gone on long enough. The United States jails more people than any other nation—both in absolute numbers and as a proportion of the population—and the vast majority of those people are in jail for the victimless, consensual “crime” of consuming a substance that the government doesn’t approve of. Numerous attempts to pass legislation relaxing marijuana prohibition have failed. An additional tactic is clearly called for.
Some people attend the rallies to protest the current state of affairs. Some people smoke at the rallies as an act of civil disobedience. And some people have simply given up caring what the government’s “laws” say they must not do.
In response to yesterday’s police overreaction and three arrests, another 420 rally is planned to take place today in Nashua at the same location, at the intersection of Main Street and Amherst Street.
